Situated by the sea and traditionally a fishing village, Cascais had an important development in the 14th century, when it was a busy port of call for ships bound for Lisbon.

However, it was from the second half of the 19th century, when sea bathing began to be appreciated, that Cascais experienced a transformational boost, becoming a fashionable holiday resort. In 1870, the King of Portugal, Luís I, converted the citadel fortress into the summer residence of the Portuguese monarchy, inspiring the nobility to build magnificent palaces and villas. This completely transformed the former fishing village.

Cascais also began to attract curious visitors, with access made easier by the inauguration of the railway line between Pedrouços and Cascais in 1889. Today, Cascais is a lively and cosmopolitan town that still retains its aristocratic air.

We recommend a stroll through its streets, with their excellent quality shops, or a moment of relaxation on one of the many terraces. The beaches remain one of the biggest attractions, and you can choose between those in the town's sheltered bay or those further out in the Guincho area, which are part of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park and ideal for surfing and windsurfing. Boca do Inferno, an indentation in the coast surrounded by steep cliffs and caves, remains a natural curiosity that attracts visitors to witness the power of the sea.

Highlights include the gastronomy, especially the fresh fish and shellfish, which can be enjoyed in the many restaurants in the region.
