Oeiras is a Portuguese village, seat of the Municipality of Oeiras located in the district and metropolitan area of Lisbon, being one of the first crown municipalities of the capital. The municipality of Oeiras, with only 45.88 km², is located in the final section of the Tagus Estuary (the Gargalo do Tejo area), on its right bank, around a small bay on the Lisbon Coast that forms a front 9 km long riverside. Administratively, it is surrounded by the municipalities of Sintra and Amadora (to the north); from Lisbon (to the east); from Cascais (to the west); and by Barra do Tejo and the municipality of Almada (to the south). Since 2013, it has been divided into five parishes with a total of 171,802 inhabitants (2021 census), making it the 5th most densely populated municipality in Portugal.

Geographically, its territory presents some roughness,[6] highlighting in its landscape the valleys of the streams and higher areas, such as the Serra de Carnaxide. It is part of the Estoril Coast, benefiting from a temperate maritime climate suitable for outdoor activities and the use of its attractive gardens, parks and beaches. Globally, it is considered a municipality that enjoys a great quality of life. Its natural conditions, with very fertile soils and proximity to the Tagus Estuary, made it the target of human occupation from an early age, with a markedly rural profile until the mid-20th century. More recently, its privileged position in relation to the capital has led to increasing development and urbanization, especially due to the relocation of companies to the county.[

In this way, Oeiras becomes an autonomous economic hub: it is one of the most developed and richest municipalities in the Iberian Peninsula and even in Europe. With the highest per capita income in Portugal, it is also the 2nd municipality with the highest purchasing power and the 2nd largest municipality to collect taxes in Portugal. The economic level is directly linked with studies and this relationship shows that Oeiras is also the municipality in Portugal with the highest concentration of population with higher education and the area of Portugal with the lowest rate of population without studies. Many multinationals are located in its territory, and around 30% of the country's scientific capacity, making it one of the main R&D centers in Europe. It positions itself as an excellent destination for investments that create added value for the region. For these reasons, Oeiras is nicknamed the Silicon Valley of Europe, mainly due to the great dynamism of its business fabric.
