Alvalade was one of the 12 parishes created by the administrative reorganization of the city of Lisbon on February 7, 1959, by detachment from the parish of Campo Grande.

The neighborhood is based on the “Urbanization Plan for the South Zone of Avenida Alferes Malheiro”, which is currently called Avenida do Brasil, authored by the architect Faria da Costa, this suggested an urban design based on the typologies of closed block, circumscribed by continuous streets, based on a little hierarchical system. It also provided for two large avenues that started from a single point, the intersection of Avenida de Roma with the railway, and which were the extension of Avenida de Roma to Avenida Alferes Malheiro (currently Avenida do Brasil) next to Hospital Júlio from Matos. This plan took place due to the lack of housing supply in the city, due to population growth, especially in low-income housing. The plan was carried out through several plans and several architects, each one with a cell of the same to be completed, which meant that there was a wide variety of constructions by the most diverse architects. The possibility of accepting variety has made Alvalade an experimental site for architecture, with the most diverse housing proposals, without losing the harmonious control of the entire complex. This method, that an urban plan can evolve during its implementation, is still, nowadays, an unexplored method. When moving to the detail plan, there were minor changes in the general plan, however the main ideas were maintained.[5]

This urbanization plan had the introduction of the “neighborhood unit” in 1944, which came to determine the structure presented today by the Bairro de Alvalade. Eight cells were thus determined, covering three different parishes in the city of Lisbon. The parishes included in the plan are: Campo Grande, São João de Brito and Alvalade. The limits correspond to important roads in the city of Lisbon: Avenida do Brasil (to the north), Avenida Gago Coutinho (to the east), the railway line (to the south), Rua de Entre-campos and Campo Grande (to the west).
