Location and History of the Parish of S. Sebastião
The parish of S. Sebastião has a rich history, dating back to March 14, 1553, when it was created by the "Letter of Dismemberment and Separation and New Creation of Mother Churches" by the Archbishop of Lisbon, D. Fernando. Originally made up of places such as Palhais and Fontaínhas, the parish expanded over the centuries, especially after the opening of the Porta de S. Sebastião in 1533, which facilitated the growth of Setúbal beyond the medieval walls.
During the 16th to 18th centuries, the parish was enriched with important religious institutions, including the Convent of S. Domingos and the Colégio dos Jesuítas. The old Hermitage of S. Sebastião, built in 1490, ended up being demolished between 1849 and 1857 after the 1755 earthquake.
Cultural and Modern Significance
Today, the parish of S. Sebastião continues to be a vital part of Setúbal, housing important institutions such as the court and standing out for its growth over the centuries, especially with the development of the canning industry in the 20th century. The area is known for historic neighborhoods such as Monarquina and S. Nicolau, and still preserves memories of the past, such as the birthplace of the poet Manuel Maria Barbosa du Bocage.
