Until then, the village was part of the Parish of Agualva-Cacém, created in May 15th, 1953, which was extinct to give place to the current administrative organization - Agualva, Cacém, Mira Sintra and São Marcos Parishes. It should also be remembered that, before 1953, Cacém belonged to the Parish of Rio de Mouro.
The majority of the area where today there are housing, commercial and service buildings, was once occupied by showy farms and villas, configured in an eminently rural environment.
The rural life of São Marcos continues during the Roman period, from which there is an important archaeological site, whose excavation began in 1979, having removed earth to detect its limits. The constructions already discovered (walls, corral) and the materials found (coins from the 2nd to 4th centuries, amphora fragments, bricks, etc.) have not yet made it possible to determine whether it was a rustic villa or a vicus (group of houses for the villa's servants and cultivators), but they point to a Roman presence at the site from the 1st century BC until the end of the 5th century.

From that time onwards and until the 13th century, the history of São Marcos remains, for the time being, obscure.
