Estremoz is a city with a long history, having its origins in the 13th century. In the year 1258, D. Afonso III grants a charter to the village of Estremoz and its walls begin to be built. This town in Alentejo has a strong connection with Queen Santa Isabel. In 1926 it was elevated to the category of city.
Estremoz is internationally known for its white marble quarries, the so-called Mármore de Estremoz. The exploitation of marble from Estremoz has a very ancient origin, as evidenced by the Roman Temple of Évora, which contains marble from Estremoz, we can still find it on the main altar of Évora Cathedral.
We can visit the Castelo de Estremoz, which is a medieval fortress, and the Torre de Menagem all built in marble.
Estremoz is a very dynamic city with its traditional fruit and vegetable market from local producers and also flea markets every Saturday morning.
