The History of the Parish of Santo António
The first parishes in the capital appear at the end of the twelfth century. At the time, a parish was considered to be a land that was delimited and where individuals following the same cult lived and having as main point a temple or a mother church.
Thus, in 1247 the parish of São Mamede was born, where you can find some of the most historic places in the capital – such as the Lisbon Botanical Garden and the National Press Building.
In 1567, with the increase in population resulting from the success of maritime trade, new parishes were created, namely the parish of S. José, and in 1755, due to the reorganization of the capital after the earthquake, the parish of Coração de Jesus was created, covering the Marquês do Pombal and Avenida da Liberdade area.
Since 2013, these three parishes - S. José, S. Mamede and Coração de Jesus - form just one, that of Santo António, with a name that honors the matchmaker saint of Lisbon.
The parish of Santo António has a vast historical heritage, housing monuments such as the Águas Livres Aqueduct, built during the 18th century, and the Marquês de Pombal Statue, built in 1934.
It is also an area strongly connected to culture and the arts, featuring several theaters – such as Teatro Tivoli and Teatro Maria Vitória – as well as the Cinemateca Portuguesa, the body that safeguards and promotes the national cinematographic heritage.
In addition to all this, this parish has the marks of the illustrious artist Almada Negreiros who lived there during the 18th century.
As far as religious monuments are concerned, in Santo António you can find the Church of the Convent of Santo António dos Capuchos and the Church of São José dos Carpinteiros, both from the 16th century, and the most recent (1924) the Church of S. Mamede.
Avenida da Liberdade is one of the main avenues in the city of Lisbon, which connects Praça dos Restauradores to Praça do Marquês de Pombal. On the eve of the Santo António de Lisboa holiday, Avenida da Liberdade is still the main stage for the traditional parades of the city's festivities that take place, in which the districts of Lisbon compete with each other for the "best popular march". It is also considered the 35th most expensive avenue in the world, becoming a reference for the wealthier classes due to the variety of shops and luxury hotels present on it.
