Mourão is a Portuguese border village, in the district of Évora, Alentejo region and sub-region of Alentejo Central, with 1,768 inhabitants (2011).
The village of Mourão is the seat of the municipality of Mourão with an area of 278.63 km² and 2,663 inhabitants (2011), subdivided into 3 parishes. The municipality is limited to the north by the municipality of Alandroal, to the east by Spain, to the southeast by Barrancos, to the south by Moura and to the west by Reguengos de Monsaraz.
This village was immortalized by Frei António das Chagas who wrote the poem "Mouram Restaurado", referring to its reconquest during the Restoration War, dedicating it to its commander and the great organizer Joanne Mendes de Vasconcelos. The town deserves to be visited.
With a very rich history, it was in its territory that the battle of Mourão took place between the Portuguese and Castilians, won by the former in 1477, during the War of Succession of Castile.
Contrary to what happens in some other border towns in Portugal and Spain (such as Évora, Elvas, Castelo Rodrigo or Zamora), there is no municipal holiday, regular official ceremony or theatrical reenactment in Mourão to mark these military victories (restoration of Mourão in 28 October 1657 or Battle of Mourão in 1477).
