The foundation of Caldas da Rainha is intertwined with the creation of the Thermal Hospital itself, indelibly influencing the identity of this city. It is, in fact, to Queen Dona Leonor that the city owes its name.

Legend has it that, in 1484, Queen Dona Leonor, wife of D. João II, had passed, on her way to Batalha, by the place where Caldas da Rainha would be born and, upon seeing a group of people bathing in warm and swampy waters, questioned them with the reason for these baths. They replied that these waters cured the most diverse ailments. The Queen also bathed there and was cured of her illness. He therefore decided to have a bathing establishment built and the Thermal Hospital of Nossa Senhora do Pópulo, in 1485, the oldest thermal hospital in the world!
