Vila Ruiva, hill of whitewashed houses attached to the steep slope, which stretch at the foot along the road that goes to Albergaria dos Fusos until Viana do Alentejo, passing through Água de Peixes. This path is nowadays secondary, but it was once the main one, as attested by the Roman Bridge that allows crossing the bed of the Ribeira de Odivelas, which served the route between Beja and Évora. The Povoação grew up along the road, as if it were any riverside village, and the road was a river that connected distant lands and people.
Vila Ruiva was a town and county seat until the beginning of the 19th century. It belonged to the Royal Monastery of Conceição de Beja. It features a beautiful Mother Church, invoking Our Lady of the Incarnation. It boasts a Roman Bridge over the Ribeira de Odivelas, also called "Ponte de Vila Ruiva" and a Dam, also Roman, known as the Nossa Senhora da Represa Dam.
The Praça do Povoado opens onto the old Roman artery that continued to serve, inviting visitors to stop. A pleasant Garden of Laranjeiras, in the good Mediterranean style, precedes the Parish Council Building, formerly part of the Town Hall, when it was the county seat, until 1836. The memory of this past status is still clearly visible in the belfry, where the bell chimed to the rhythm of municipal life, symbol of municipal power that, in times, stood prominently in the center of the square.
