_____
The parish of Monte do Trigo, is still considered one of the richest in the entire municipality of Portel, and its main economic activities are agriculture and livestock.
Everything indicates that the current parish of Monte do Trigo already constituted, in the 13th century, “a very important and fundamental space both in terms of its geographic location (as a distributing node of the road network that served the region)” and in terms of economic resources, which led to the fact that the lands of Monte do Trigo were not, from the outset, included in the donation made by D. Afonso III to D. João de Aboim. The new owner of Portel, attracted by the rich “clays” of Monte do Trigo, managed to have several lands donated to him in 1265 by an owner couple. From that date, the new term of Portel also included the rich lands of Monte do Trigo.
In 1283, the Monte do Trigo estate was owned by the crown, when D. Dinis exchanged it for Vila de Alvito, thus becoming the property of the Monastery of Trindade in Santarém. In the 15th century, part of this reguengo was donated to the Countess of Faro. Subsequently, the entire area became part of the patronage of the Casa de Bragança.
The toponymic origin of this Parish is unknown, although some references point as a possible cause, the excellent cereal harvests, especially wheat, that those lands produced. The patron saint of San Julião, Bishop of Cuenca, is linked to several miracles related to “killing the poor by receiving wheat from the hands of God”.
