São Salvador de Ramalde parish is mentioned for the first time with the archaic name of Rianhaldy, in the Inquiries of D. Afonso III, in 1258. However, it is already mentioned previously, as a place, in a 1222 document in which Queen Mafalda makes a donation to the Monastery of Arouca. The origin and growth of the town of Rianhaldy is lost in time, before the foundation of the Portuguese monarchy, probably between 920 and 944, when the monks of S. Bento arrived in the territory. Thus the story of the judge of Bouças and his ancient Benedictine monastery would begin. This territory belonged to the Royal Patronage of D. Sancho I, who later donated it, in 1196, to his daughter D. Mafalda. At the time of D. Sancho II, the territory was called Ramunhaldy and consisted of five places: Francos, Requezendi, Ramuhaldi Jusão and Ramuhaldi Susão (now Ramalde do Meio). Between 1230 and 1835 it belonged to the municipality of Bouças, which also included S. Mamede de Infesta, Matosinhos, Foz do Douro and a group of twenty villages. In 1895 it was integrated in the municipality of Porto, as a parish. Its limits were defined as follows: to the north, the municipality of Matosinhos (Bouças); south Lordelo do Ouro; the Paranhos and Cedofeita uprising and the west Aldoar.
