Póvoa de Lanhoso is a Portuguese village located in the sub-region of Ave, belonging to the North region and the district of Braga.
It is the seat of the Municipality of Póvoa de Lanhoso, which has a total area of 134.65 km2,
21,787 inhabitants in 2021 and a population density of 162 inhabitants per km2, subdivided into 22 parishes. The municipality is limited to the north by the municipality of Amares, to the east by Vieira do Minho, to the south by Fafe and Guimarães and to the west by Braga.
The highest point in the municipality is at the top of São Mamede, at 743 meters above sea level, in the parish of Frades.
These lands have been inhabited since time immemorial - at least three thousand years before Christ. At the entrance to the largest granite monolith in the Iberian Peninsula, on top of which the Castle of Lanhoso is located, there is a romanized castro, which dates back to the Copper Age. The Castle of Lanhoso has a high historical value, being also the place where the legends say that D. Afonso Henriques imprisoned his own mother, D. Teresa. King D. Dinis granted the charter to Terras de Lanhoso on September 25, 1292, and the charter was renewed by King D. Manuel I on January 4, 1514.
In the spring of 1846, it was here that the Maria da Fonte revolution began. Starting from a refusal to accept the new law not to bury the dead inside churches, the uprising managed to spread to the rest of the country, showing the discontent of the people, and managing to provoke a change in government.
