The calm waters and good winds create excellent conditions for surfing, bodyboarding, windsurfing, kitesurfing and sailing. It is therefore popular with many families, lovers of these sports and also standup paddle and canoeing on quieter days.

Since 1987, it has been part of the National Ecological Reserve and is a special protection area for birds, with a number of observatories having been built in the Estacada Lagoon to observe them.
