Classified as a Property of Public Interest by the Portuguese Institute of Cultural Heritage, the “Casa do Ermo”, built in the 17th century, in 1695, was owned by José Cardoso Vieira de Castro, a close friend and confidant of Camilo Castelo Branco. The famous novelist of “Amor de Perdição”, took refuge in “Casa do Ermo”, in 1860, when he was fleeing justice for the accusation of adultery with Ana Plácido.
Camilo speaks of this refuge in the lands of Fafe in the book “Memórias do Cárcere”. And in homage to his friend, he published the “Mistérios de Fafe”, “O Morgado de Fafe em Lisboa” and “O Morgado de Fafe Amoroso”. It is a historic building, which is part of the architectural, tourist and cultural itinerary of the Municipality of Fafe.
The property has a total area of 123.000m2, of which an agricultural part with 33.000 m2 and a forestry part with 90.000 m2. It has two urban buildings.
The “Casa do Ermo” with an implantation area of 755 m2 and gross construction area of 899 m2. It is a 17th-century single-family house, standing out for its size, construction features and wide staircase.
