Located in the middle of the Alentejo plain, on high ground from which vast horizons are embraced, the charming town of Alvito develops around its paladin castle, where the Pousada de Alvito is currently located.
The white painted houses give the village of Alvito the unmistakable character that distinguishes the Alentejo and many of them have doors with Manueline arches, revealing their 17th century origin.
The village dates back to the early days of the Portuguese monarchy. The first charter was granted by King D. Dinis in 1327 and would be confirmed by D. Manuel in 1516.
Alvito Castle, construction started in 1494, is one of the most curious buildings in Portugal. Visiting it is still evoking moments from the historical past that were lived here. The long Arab presence in these places left its distinctive mark on the Mudejar architecture (easily recognizable by the small domes and conical spires painted in white), which are evident in several monuments. This Mudejar character involves the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Assunção and also the Hermitage of S. Sebastião.
Also worthy of attention is the Town Hall building, where a picturesque typical Alentejo clock tower stands out, as well as the churches of Misericórdia and Senhora das Candeias (the latter housing a museum of Sacred Art), which are interesting works of architectural value.
Out of doors, the small hermitage of Santa Luzia deserves mention, which was originally a Muslim oratory.
