Until the date of its extinction in 2013, Sabugueiro was the most recent Parish in the Municipality of Arraiolos. The creation of the Parish was approved by the Assembly of the Portuguese Republic on March 11, 1988, with its diploma issued in the Diário da República on May 23, 1988.
Although the Parish is recent, the village of Sabugueiro is very old. The village already existed in 1421, as stated in a document from that year existing in the Cabido da Sé de Évora.
Thus, the most likely hypothesis for the foundation of the village must find an explanation in the good natural conditions of the place. A flat and airy place, ideal for the construction of houses and for a daily life with quality of life, especially if we think that we are alluding to medieval times, more precisely the 13th or 14th century, the most likely period for the emergence of the village of Sabugueiro .
Currently, the Parish has a set of associative, cultural, assistance and sports equipment that allow the population to maintain a good quality of life and that are a complement to the natural characteristics of the place where the village was built in medieval times.
As Sabugueiro is inserted in a territory with excellent agricultural skills, it is also equipped with equipment that allow its population (from childhood to the elderly population) a good quality of life, where it is possible to overcome the
isolation that many measures that have been imposed on Democratic Local Power insist on accentuating.
Until the date of its aggregation, in 2013, in the area occupied by this Parish there is a significant set of equipment and services (Parish Council, Medical Post, Day and Home Centre, Community Centre, Basic School of 1st cycle, Kindergarten, Recreational Society Irmãos Unidos do Sabugueiro, União Futebol Clube do Sabugueiro, Youth Association of Sabugueiro, Soccer Field, Multisport, Church and Cemetery).
The parish of Sabugueiro is 16 km from the village of Arraiolos, 36 km from Évora, 18 km from Montemor-o-Novo, 120 km from Lisbon and 118 km from Badajoz (SPAIN).
